The daughter of a middle class family in Mumbai she began learning to dance at an early age. When she was in her early years when she started to act as a child actor, the majority of films she produced weren't successful. She finally found success, and then was one of the top actresses in the Indian film business. Following her marriage she had an absence from the industry before returning to the industry. She was a key character on Gulaab Gang, a film focused on women's struggles in India. Dixit was nominated 15 times for Filmfare Awards. She won eight of these. Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian honour in India. Her social work is also well-known.
